- I have a Navy Seal water question?
When I watch movies where Seals, or anyone else in the military, goes swimming in fresh water that has a LOT of debris, i.e. visibility underwater is near ZERO, I can't help but think about what LIVES in that type of water; a lot of different reptiles that bite, and even water insects that sting, and bite. I was watching a security camera video where a guy was mowing the grass along a canal when a alligator suddenly burst out of the water, grabbed the mower with it's mouth, and then threw the mower into the water! It happened so fast, the guy just stood there, completely shocked. I watch that and I get chills about our troops swimming around in such water. Damn...

A I think you'll find that most large predators tend to stay away from water with a lot of noise... like motors and explosions... even the cavitation of underwater propeller blades. Even a snake will try to leave if the meal is too large. Furthermore SEAL movements in the water are coordinated and smooth... not like a prey in trouble. Most predators don't go after stuff that's larger than they are if it looks like it can take care of itself. But, yeah, there are a few critters who will brave it for a meal... leeches mostly. Although, in Coronado, they do warn the candidates about the sharks. Sharks will go after just about anything... especially if there's blood in the water. Me? I retired from the Navy after a quarter of a century... first 4 years enlisted, the rest commissioned... and I got to know a few SEALs along the way.

I was thinking of getting a Vivitar 8.1MP Underwater Digital Camera, but I was wondering does it work out of the water, since summer is coming to an end I won't be in my pool, or beach anymore. So i wanted to know if I could use it when I'm not going to be in the water, when I'm going to be inside or something. Is it a good camera? Thanks

A Yes, you can use it when you're not going to be in the water. It's an ok camera. Olympus has the best reputation. - Advice on fairly cheap underwater digital camera?
I am going on holiday soon and will probably doing a lot of snorkeling, maybe some diving as well, definitely going shark diving for a start. Any way, since I tend to take a lot of pictures and don't really want to come after a few minutes to change the film of my film camera (very simple reusable underwater one), I was thinking of maybe getting a cheap underwater digital one. Doesn't have to be fancy as long as it takes decent pictures in fairly good conditions, it doesn't even have to be waterproof beyond snorkeling depth as I will get a better camera once I have the opportunity to dive more often. This would only be a temporary solution so I don't want it to be overly expensive, preferably under £100. It would be nice if it had a video function and the batteries last relatively long ( I generally use Energizer ultimate lithium for small digi cams). A Those things are toys at best, and you would not be happy with the quality. Perhaps you should consider buying disposable waterproof film cameras - they would give you much better quality (and I am VERY much in favor of digital, but in this case.....). Underwater photography is expensive, and if you don't have much of a budget, you are VERY limited. Edited to add: I am not saying that disposable cameras are all that good, but compared to the results you would get from a very cheap digital one, they ARE better (and remember we're talking about waterproof stuff here). As you found out yourself - cases etc are expensive, and you are unwilling or unable to spend more money. So I'm afraid you're stuck with lower quality, no matter what you do. There is good gear out there, but wow....... it costs!

- How do you get the sound on videos to work on a Vivitar Vivicam 8400 underwater camera?
So I just bought a Vivitar Vivicam 8400 underwater digital camera and when I take videos, no sound is recorded. It says that it has a built in microphone for sound but I can't find it. I thought it may just be that the camera itself doesn't have speakers to play back the sound, but even when I upload the videos onto my computer they still don't have sound? Pleas help me I'm going on a trip to Belize soon and I would love to have sound in my videos!

A On the back of your camera, right of the LCD screen. You should see up, down, left and right control. Push the right arrow button, this should change the flash settings. A if you have one of the Xacti waterproof cameras, then the sea water won't bother it. afterwards rinse the exterior of the camera off with freshwater, otherwise a salty brine may form on the lens when it is dry.

im looking for an underwater video camera and something that goes preferably more than 10ft underwater. ive heard about the sanyo e1 but that only goes to 5ft but is that a good camera overall? and are there any other good underwater video cameras?

A The cameras designed for immersion (when they say "5 ft", they're basically saying, swim but don't dive) are never the best camcorders around. Those Sanyos offer average video quality at best. Another one from Panasonic, the SDR-SW20, is similar: operation to 5ft, and moderate at best standard-def video quality. On the other hand, you're only spending $350... can't expect a miracle. The other option is, of course, to enclose an existing camcorder. If you don't have any, this will certainly up the cost, perhaps by quite a bit. Awhile back, I got a lower cost enclosure for my Sony AVR-H1 hi-def camcorder. This is from EWA Marine, and it's basically a $200 ziplock bag with a lens window. This worked great, it's supposed to be good for up to one atmosphere (33 feet in saltwater). It's a bit cumbersome, and there's still some resistance to putting your $2000+ camcorder into a plastic bag, even an expensive one. But a hard case for my small camcorder (Canon HV10) ran $700, and for the Sony, at least $1000. If you're leaning this way, you might even consider pricing the case first, then buying the camcorder to fit it. Another option... smaller cameras are cheaper to enclose, as you might expect. While a hard enclosure for my Sony could run into the thousands, cases for digital still cameras run much cheaper, many below $200 that are full fledged underwater enclosures... good for 100ft or more. Since almost any digital still camera has a video mode arguably as good as these "waterproof" cameras, I'd consider that. In fact, my Panasonic DMC-TZ5 probably has a much better video mode... that's 1280x720 at 30p, reasonably clear video (it's not HDV, but it's good enough). That's a $300 camera, and you need an enclosure that's about $220 for it, but then you have 130 ft or so to play with. You really don't get much audio regardless, so the poor quality microphone in most P&S cameras is not a problem.

The speed would only matter if you can (and will) take lots of photos in burst (continuous shooting) mode.

A It depends on where you take pictures. Shallow or deep. The deeper you go the less light, also the clarity of the water plays a big part of it as well. Large strobes light up particulate matter more than smaller flashes. From the specs. it looks like a nice camera. Also remember that strobes make the camera more bulky to carry around as well. I would try it out first before spending more money. 90-95% of divers who take pictures don't use Strobes. Although the best pictures taken are often with strobes.

- Will this Wide Angle Lens fit my Sealife DC800?
I have a SeaLife DC800 and want to put a the Wide Angle Lens (SL970) on my camera. On their website it says it doesn't work because it will "viginatte" the photo. Has anyone had any experience with adding the wide angle lens to the DC800? If so did black marks end up on the corner of your photos? Thank you.

A No idea what either of those are (sorry!) However vignetting occurs when the lens is essential a bit too small for the mount (in diameter) and results in darkened edges. Solution: Zooming in or stopping down!
